How to Set Up Your Flex Aware Connected Cable - Part 2

Video Overview

We recommend watching this video for a helpful visual of the installation process. To read through the steps to configure your device, please continue reading below.

Gather Recommended Tools

Gather all tools that will assist you in your installation:

  • Drill
  • Drill bit (1/16th and 1/8th in) for pre-drilling screw holes
  • Phillips head #2 screwdriver for hand tightening screws
  • Pliers for tightening/cutting zip ties

Determine the Installation Method

In your box you will find 4 wood screws, 4 self-tapping screws, zip ties, and dual lock tape. You can determine which installation method to use based upon your installation location.

  • Use screws for an extremely durable, permanent solution on wooden or other penetrable surfaces, like pasture gates with wood posts (recommended method).  Use the included wood screws for wooden surfaces and the self-tapping screws for metal surfaces.
  • Use zip ties for metallic, impenetrable surfaces that are thin enough for the zip ties to wrap around, like pool gates or metal pasture gates.
  • We do not recommend using the dual lock tape on its own, but rather to assist when installing with zip ties or screws. Apply the dual lock tape to the back of the device and then secure the device to the post with zip ties or screws for a secure installation.

Test Cellular Reception at the Installation Location

You will need:

  • Your Flex Aware Connected Cable sensor
  • The All Aware screwdriver (included in your shipping box)
  • A paperclip (included in your Flex Aware Connected Cable box)

Step 1. Go to the location where you will install your Flex Aware Connected Cable

Step 2. Remove the battery door and insert the batteries, leaving the battery door cover removed

Step 3. Using a paper clip, push the diagnostic button and hold for five seconds, then release. The LED on your Flex Aware will light up

Do not hold the button for longer than ten seconds, or the device will reboot. If this happens, please wait 60 seconds or until the device turns back on with a blinking LED before attempting the cellular test again.

Once diagnostic mode is initiated, the LED will display the cell signal strength in a continuous loop for 2 minutes based on the patterns below. It may take up to 30 seconds for the signal strength to be acquired.

Signal strength LED pattern LED visual
Signal strength pending Solid red Solid_red.png
0 bars Single red LED blink every 8 seconds 0_bars.png
1 bar 1 red LED blink, followed by 1 yellow LED blink 1_bar.png
2 bars 1 red LED blink, followed by 2 yellow LED blinks 2_bars.png
3 bars 1 red LED blink, followed by 3 yellow LED blinks 3_bars.png
4 bars 1 red LED blink, followed by 4 yellow LED blinks 4_bars.png
5 bars 1 red LED blink, followed by 5 yellow LED blinks 5_bars.png
6 bars 1 red LED blink, followed by 6 yellow LED blinks 6_bars.png

As you move the device, any changes in signal strength will be displayed by updates to the LED pattern. We recommend a signal strength of 2 bars or greater at your installation location. If you receive less than two bars, we recommend contacting All Aware support for assistance.
